The 4 Steps to a Healthy Body

The very first thing we can do to have better health is to look after our body. At this present time, it is the most understood part of us and our knowledge about the human body allows helps us to incorporate some simple changes to our lives to have good physical health. It is not the only aspect of us, there's the mind and the spirit to still understand and care for but for most people, the body is the easiest to maintain.

There are four important things we must do. Do you know what these four things are?

Watch the video below.

The Immune System

and Stress

When the immune system is suppressed it does not protect us as well as it would normally and this gives the opportunity for disease, bacteria and illness to develop. The good news is we can manage our stress better and positive emotions can also enhance the immune system.

"Researchers have found a wealth of evidence that positive emotions can enhance the immune system, while negative emotions can suppress it."

So how can we deal with stress? Follow the activity in the workbook.

You will need a cup you can hold in your hand.

To better understand stress try the exercise below:

  1.        Take a glass and fill it with water.
  2.        Hold the glass in one hand at arms length and try to keep your arm straight.
  3.        As you hold the glass out, see how long you can hold the glass without

dropping  your hand (or the glass).

  4.        When the glass gets too heavy, put it down.

Stress is like holding onto the glass.  At first things in our lives can be easy to hold.  I mean they are easy to handle, just like when you first hold the glass.  Stress becomes a problem when we hold onto something for too long and it becomes so hard to handle it affects us negatively.  In our example, we have to put the glass down to relieve the stress.  In life we have many ways to lessen the stress, they are called coping strategies.  Below is a short list of coping strategies you could use and you might be able to think of more.

  • Talk about the problem with a trusted adult.
  • Listen to some music or "mindfulness".
  • Draw a picture.
  • Go for a walk (take the dog if you have one) or play with your friends.
  • Do something to help someone else.
  • Watch a film.

Can you think of some more?

Well Done for learning about this skill!

You can now return back to the workbook
